The Springs Preserve in Las Vegas is an amazing place. You can not see it all in one visit. I was there recently for the first time for about 3 hours and barely scratched the surface of what this extraordinary place has to offer.
Springs Preserve has been in the planning stages since the late 1990’s. Ground was broken in 2005 and opened in 2007. Administered by the Las Vegas Valley Water District. This agency manages the city’s water and promotes conservation. Some of the ads on television for conservation are very very funny but to the point that we all need to do our part in conserving water. Here is one of the commercials it is funny.
I have wandered off topic a bit but I just had to share that commercial and show you the kind of innovative people who planned and run the Springs Preserve. The Preserve is known as the birth place of Las Vegas and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Preserve has entertainment, exhibits, galleries, trails and gardens. Like I say one visit will not allow you to see everything. Exhibits change and new things being added all of the time. I am thinking about getting a yearly pass. They have so many changing exhibits and special programs. It might be worth it. I will have more in a series of this wondrous place but for now what I have seen is the Origen Experience and The Sustainable House.
The Origen Experience features a flash flood, galleries, theater, interactive children’s exhibits, kids can dig for fossils, and learn about the animals that living in our desert. Education is a key element at the Springs and visitors can gain a wealth of knowledge. There is also exhibits that have snakes, Gila monsters, lizards, bats and more. There is a history of water and the Springs is portrays with clear floors with all sorts of interesting underneath. I tell you this place is truly amazing.
The Sustainable House is an exhibit that shows many interesting this to live and and Eco friendly. Did you know there is a washer and dryer combination that is one machine? I did not but they have been manufactured for a while. How about a compost toilet? There is a kitchen, bathroom and laundry room that shows all the things available to save water, money and time. Shows different materials to build houses out of, mud, straw, oh so interesting.
To see more pictures of this wonderful place I have a set on flickr
